Will Manuel Neuer go to the 2026 World Cup after all? The discussion about a possible DFB comeback for the Bayern captain continues to gather pace – but Vincent Kompany deliberately refused to make a clear statement on the matter

At the press conference ahead of the final Bundesliga match against 1. FC Köln, the Bayern coach was asked about his goalkeeper’s possible World Cup nomination. However, the Belgian deliberately avoided making a clear recommendation to national coach Julian Nagelsmann

„I always have my colleague Julian Nagelsmann in mind, who now has all the pressure of putting together the squad for the World Cup,“ explained Kompany

Kompany: Manu is the „best German goalkeeper“

However, the Bayern coach did not remain completely without a statement. Kompany made it clear how important Neuer continues to be to the record champions. „FC Bayern are German champions and we have the best German goalkeeper. That says it all,“ emphasized the 40-year-old

Kompany thus indirectly backed his captain without wanting to put Nagelsmann under public pressure

According to BILD, Neuer is on the DFB’s provisional 55-man list for the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico. Nagelsmann is also said to be considering taking four goalkeepers with him to the tournament

While the World Cup question remains open, Neuer’s future at FC Bayern seems to have been clarified. According to consistent media reports, the 40-year-old has extended his contract by a further year. The official announcement could be made this championship weekend

Sporting director Max Eberl also commented positively on the ongoing talks on Friday: „We’re talking. We’re talking and it looks good, but there’s nothing to announce yet.“

Eberl particularly highlighted Neuer’s extraordinary career: „His entire career has been characterized by extraordinary highs, but also by one or two lows.“

With regard to the keeper’s performances in the Champions League, the Bayern boss added: „When you see how he performs in the Champions League, it’s very special.“
