Oyarzabal’s brace against Saudi Arabia delivered the seventh and eighth World Cup goals by a Real Sociedad player, ending an eight-year wait since Adnan Januzaj scored in 2018. The Eibar-born forward put Real back on the tournament scoresheet.
In the second group-stage match, he set up Lamine Yamal for the opener, then struck twice in quick succession, first from an Aymeric Laporte pass after a corner, then turning in Dani Olmo’s centre. Diario Vasco notes he now joins a select group of Real scorers at World Cups, among them López Ufarte, Zamora, Górriz, Mutiu, Seferovic and Januzaj.
Roberto López Ufarte opened the club’s World Cup account in 1982, converting a penalty to equalise against Honduras in the group opener. Jesús Mari Zamora also scored at that tournament, in the second group phase against West Germany in a 2-1 defeat.
Eight years on, Bixio Górriz headed the winner against Belgium at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, a 2-1 win. Another eight years later, Mutiu Adepoju netted versus Spain in 1998 as Nigeria sprang a surprise.
Haris Seferovic hit a stoppage-time winner against Ecuador in 2014, and Januzaj later struck against England in 2018 to seal top spot for Belgium. Belgium reached the semi-finals, lost to France, and finished third.
All previous Real World Cup goals came in the group phase, with Zamora’s arriving in the second group stage. Guedes, Kubo, Sucic and Caleta-Car, until 30 June, are the other Real players in position to score at this World Cup.
