Pablo Longoria has put financial balance ahead of January recruitment, using Marseille’s mid-season review to stress prudence alongside on-pitch ambition.
According to L'Équipe, the president spoke at the Vélodrome on Thursday, before visiting children at Timone hospital and attending an evening with club partners at the Mucem.
He said the first half of the season matched expectations and urged the squad to seek more, with a decisive January bringing seven to eight matches. Ambition must be managed to avoid frustration, he added.
The club’s finances have stabilised but room remains limited. Longoria noted that summer business ran higher than planned, so finances must be adjusted. He believes the squad is competitive and, if the economy allows, solutions to strengthen will be assessed, though reinforcement is not the priority.
He said no important player is intended to be sold, despite Italian reports linking Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg with Juventus. There have been no talks and the door is closed, he said.
Longoria also said Marseille would hold 65% of Mason Greenwood’s rights if they qualify for the Champions League at season’s end.
On Roberto De Zerbi, contracted until 2027, Longoria called the situation clear. Everyone wants him to stay for many years and he is the ideal coach for Marseille, he said, adding that this is not the moment to discuss his future. He will look to align with De Zerbi’s ambition.
