Palmeiras have condemned the STJD’s complaint against Mauricio for an elbow on Cacá, issuing an official statement on Saturday. The club said in a statement that the move undermines refereeing authority, noted VAR chose not to intervene, and argued similar incidents involving Pulgar and Raniele were not pursued.
The flashpoint came during the midweek 4-0 win at Vitória in Salvador, when Mauricio was shown a yellow card. In two separate Vitória incidents, VAR intervened and Cacá and Luan Cândido were sent off. On Thursday, Palmeiras had already released a separate note defending the officiating of that match.
Relations with the tribunal have been strained since Abel Ferreira’s eight-match suspension. Recent cases involving Allan and Paulinho have further fuelled debate about the treatment the club receives.
Mauricio will be tried under article 254 of the CBJD, which covers violent conduct. The incident involved Cacá minutes before the defender was dismissed for a foul on Jhon Arias. The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
Before that, Palmeiras face Fortaleza in the Copa do Brasil at 16:00 on Sunday at Nubank Parque. If Mauricio is not absolved, the club’s legal team will appeal to the Tribunal Pleno, the final instance in Brazilian sporting justice. The club expects the attacking midfielder to be cleared.
