Palmeiras have confirmed Joaquín Piquerez will undergo surgery after rupturing a ligament in his right ankle.

The left-back was injured in the 1-1 draw against England at Wembley, going off in the first half. According to Nosso Palestra, he still has a chance of making the World Cup in June.

Examinations on Sunday 29 confirmed a serious right ankle ligament rupture requiring surgery, which is set to take place in the coming days. After the operation he will begin immediate rehabilitation with the club’s Núcleo de Saúde e Performance, under additional oversight from the Uruguayan FA’s medical staff.

Palmeiras have not set a recovery timeline, though the expectation is that he could be sidelined for up to two months. The decision to operate was driven largely by the player’s wish to return quickly for club and country. Both Palmeiras and Uruguay will monitor his recovery daily.

In his absence, Abel Ferreira’s options at left-back are Jefté and academy graduate Arthur, with Arthur used more recently. Palmeiras face Grêmio on 02/04 at 21:30 Brasília time in the Campeonato Brasileiro.
