Palmeiras duo called up for Argentina national team

The Argentina National Team announced this Friday (3rd) the squad for the upcoming FIFA Date, where they will face Venezuela and Puerto Rico in friendlies next week. Forward Flaco López appears once again on Lionel Scaloni’s list, while midfielder Aníbal Moreno has been called up for his national team for the first time.

Signed by Palmeiras for the 2024 season, midfielder Aníbal Moreno used to play for Racing in Argentina, but had never been called up to represent his national team. In the 2025 season, the defensive midfielder is a starter for Abel Ferreira’s team and has been called up for the first time by coach Lionel Scaloni, who won the World Cup in 2022 in Qatar.

Meanwhile, forward Flaco López is enjoying a brilliant moment at Palmeiras and has been called up by Argentina for the second consecutive time. In the previous FIFA Date, still during the World Cup Qualifiers, Flaco was not included in the squad for one match and remained on the bench in the other.

October 10, 2025, at 9:00 PM (Brasília time) — Argentina vs. Venezuela

October 13, 2025, at 8:00 PM (Brasília time) — Puerto Rico vs. Argentina

Absences in the Brasileirão

Even though the Brazilian Championship will be paused due to the FIFA Dates, Palmeiras will be without its players for the match against Juventude at Allianz Parque, scheduled for the 11th, Wednesday, at 7:00 PM (Brasília time).

This is a postponed Brasileirão match, considering that Palmeiras participated in the FIFA Club World Cup and had to travel to the United States, while the other clubs played the round in question.

Flaco López and Aníbal Moreno are, so far, the only absences due to national team call-ups for the matches. In Carlo Ancelotti’s call-up, Palmeiras remained ‘unscathed’, with no players selected. The call-ups for Uruguay and Paraguay are still pending.

What now?

With fewer games played compared to their rivals, the team currently sits in second place with 52 points, behind Flamengo with 54, and ahead of Cruzeiro with 50. The Rio team, who will finish the round with one more game than Palmeiras, and the Minas Gerais team, with two more games, face each other this Thursday (2nd) at Maracanã.

Verdão returns to the field for the Brazilian Championship next Sunday (5th) against São Paulo at Morumbis, for the 27th round of the national competition. The match kicks off at 4:00 PM (Brasília time).
