Palmeiras have called off their move for Nino, leaving Fluminense with a clearer run at talks with Zenit.

According to Globo.com, the São Paulo club do not plan to approach the defender or his camp in this window, and Fluminense are now seen as favourites.

Palmeiras tried to sign him in the last window, tabling an offer of about R$ 40 million. Zenit refused at the time while chasing the Russian title, promising greater flexibility mid-year.

During the wait, Palmeiras had aligned salary, bonuses and contract length with Nino, but a fresh option emerged. Alexander Barboza declined to renew at Botafogo amid a severe financial crisis, and Palmeiras paid roughly R$ 20 million for him. He is set to debut after the World Cup.

With Barboza arriving, Palmeiras judged another centre-back unnecessary and contact over Nino faded. That suited Fluminense, who moved to make a deal.

The Rio club have opened talks, yet a Zenit counter-offer has sought a higher fee and shorter payment terms. That is the main hurdle, and a conclusion is viewed as difficult, though Fluminense hope their good relationship with the Russians can help progress.

For now, Nino has not ruled out staying in Europe. He remains in touch with Fluminense’s hierarchy, while leaving decisions and negotiations to his agents. Discussions are likely to develop in the coming weeks, and he remains a Zenit player.
