Palmeiras loanee Gilberto Junior responds after father’s Corinthians claim | OneFootball

Palmeiras right-back Gilberto Junior, on loan at Athletico, has distanced himself from his father’s viral remarks about him being a Corinthians supporter. In a statement, he said he has a long-standing distant relationship with his father and that the comments do not reflect his views, values or professional decisions. He also posted a photo in a Palmeiras shirt captioned “Para sempre um cria da Academia”.

The remarks were made before Corinthians faced Athletico in the 21st round at Neo Química Arena. “He went to Palmeiras very early and I always asked the guys, ‘Give my son a chance to play for Corinthians, we are Corinthians. It is my dream. But you know how it is at Corinthians. The academy does not move’,” he said in an interview with Rádio Craque Neto.

He added: “People say, ‘How can you support Palmeiras if you are a Corinthians fan?’ My son comes first, my blood comes first. If he plays for Flamengo, a team I detest, I will support Flamengo.”

The father’s words were poorly received by Palmeiras fans. Gilberto joined the club at 12, progressed through all youth levels, became a standout and is regarded as a prospect of note.

In his statement, Gilberto reaffirmed deep respect, affection and gratitude to Palmeiras, saying the club transformed his life and was decisive in his development. He said only he or his official representatives are authorised to speak about his career.

Gilberto was loaned to Athletico in December last year. He has made 16 appearances, six in the Brasileirão, and has one assist.
