Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer reflected on his side’s 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich in their Champions League opener, admitting he felt they merited more.

The Blues began the match brightly but fell behind as Bayern capitalised on key errors. Palmer pulled one back for Chelsea, scoring the only goal for his team on the night.

Missed chances and costly errors

Bayern went ahead through Trevoh Chalobah’s own goal before Harry Kane doubled the lead from the penalty spot.

Cole Palmer pulled one back in the 29th minute, but Kane soon restored Bayern’s two-goal cushion. Palmer later thought he had scored again, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.

Speaking to TNT Sport after the match, Palmer expressed his frustration that Chelsea’s wasted opportunities ultimately cost them in a contest where they had started well.

“Yeah. We deserved more to be honest,” Palmer said.

“We started well and had early chances to score but when you make mistakes at the highest level, it’s hard to come back.”

The 23-year-old admitted that Bayern’s ruthlessness was the difference but also pointed to his team’s lapses in key moments.

Learning curve for Chelsea

Palmer stressed that Chelsea proved they could compete with one of the top sides in the tournament. He felt the defeat highlighted areas that must improve if the team are to progress.

“We have shown we can compete. We are not coming here to learn.”

“A lack of concentration, not managing the moments. We have shown we can play against one of the best teams in the competition and we deserved more.”

“It’s a good learning curve. We need to keep going from here.”

Despite the defeat, Palmer’s performance stood out, with his sharpness and direct play causing Bayern problems. His goal also provided some encouragement that Chelsea are capable of threatening Europe’s best.

Enzo Maresca’s side will now turn their focus back to domestic duties. They face a tough test at Old Trafford where they meet Manchester United in the Premier League.

Chelsea will aim to bounce back quickly, with Palmer insisting that the squad can build on the positives from their European setback.
