Paris swung between celebration and disorder on Saturday night as PSG beat Arsenal 1-1, 4-3 on penalties to win a second Champions League, with crowds flooding the Grands Boulevards and the Champs-Élysées. The ministry later said nearly 300 arrests were made in the Paris region and 416 nationwide in a 1.30am briefing.
Chants of "Sa-fo-nov" erupted as Gabriel sent his kick over in Budapest. Flares had already appeared after Gonçalo Ramos converted the first penalty, and only a handful of tall patrons saw the shootout on bar screens as others reacted to the noise outside.
The miss triggered a surge that drew tear gas from a nearby line of CRS officers, prompting a scramble as people covered their faces. Despite coughing, supporters on foot and by metro, with many stations closed, drifted towards the Champs-Élysées where thorough searches were in place.
Fireworks still slipped through and were set off by some, while chants of Après tant d'années and Et Ousmane Ballon d'Or rolled around until CRS charges broke up gatherings. The cat-and-mouse continued with an estimated 20,000 people on the avenue.
One CRS near Rue du Colisée said there were fewer incidents than last year but noted the night was not over. The tally was below 31 May 2025, when victory over Inter Milan brought 559 arrests.
Oppressive heat, up to 37 degrees in the afternoon, and familiarity may have lowered tensions, a regular named Benji felt. Horns blared on Rue La Boétie, one of the few nearby streets still open, while the Grands Boulevards were strewn with spent fireworks, and around 20 police vehicles remained on Boulevard Montmartre at 23.00.
