The Paris eighth arrondissement has called for 'zero gatherings' on the Champs-Élysées after unrest that followed Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League final win over Arsenal. According to L'Équipe, the appeal was set out in a statement on Sunday.

The final finished 1-1, PSG winning 4-3 on penalties.

In the statement, officials said the avenue and its surroundings stopped being a place of celebration and turned into an arena of urban clashes. They argued that since festivities spill into rioting, the only sensible response is a new doctrine, 'zero gatherings'.

Catherine Lécuyer, the LR mayor of the eighth arrondissement, called the night an indictment of public impotence. She cited multiple attacks on the security forces, mortar fire aimed at police and homes, bin and car fires, damage to police vehicles and numerous looting incidents.

Interior minister Laurent Nuñez announced more than 400 arrests at a news conference at half past one in the morning.

PSG's players are due at the Champ-de-Mars in the seventh arrondissement on Sunday, then at the Élysée in the afternoon to meet President Emmanuel Macron, before returning to the Parc des Princes in the evening.
