Patrice Evra warns Michael Carrick call could turn Man United into Chelsea | OneFootball

Patrice Evra has warned Manchester United that they risk going down the Chelsea route if they pass up on the chance to appoint Michael Carrick permanently.

United are firmly on course to secure Champions League football following Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Matheus Cunha scored the only goal of the evening, producing a fine finish to turn in a superb Bruno Fernandes delivery. The win saw United open a 10-point gap between themselves and the Blues, who are currently in a poor run of form under Liam Rosenior.

United now need just six points from their remaining five Premier League games to mathematically book their spot in the continent’s most prestigious competition.

After the final whistle, a beaming Carrick was full of praise for his players, particularly the central defensive pairing of Ayden Heaven and Noussair Mazraoui. The two stars stepped up admirably in the absence of Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez due to suspensions.

Despite the success Carrick continues to enjoy in the dugout, it’s still not clear whether or not he will be handed the job on a permanent basis. United insist that no knee-jerk decisions will be made, and an appointment will only get over the line once every option available has been considered.

Other managers who continue to be linked to the Old Trafford hot seat include Julian Nagelsmann, Andoni Iraola, Oliver Glasner and Unai Emery.

However, Evra strongly believes that United should stick with Carrick as he is already showing he can get results and get the team playing good football.

Evra fires warning

Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, the Frenchman said of bringing in a new manager, “We’ll have to start from zero again. I just feel like we’ll become like Chelsea, every year. And this is not United, we need consistency. Carra is doing miracles!”

“I don’t know why they think too much about the future. The present is Carra to get the top four spot. That’s the goal and I think we are in a good direction for that.”

Evra continued, “We keep saying experience or whatever. We try with big names, with [Jose] Mourinho, with [Louis] Van Gaal, with Amorim. That’s why, for me, should Carra get the job? This is not the question of the day, of the moment. Carra is doing a good job so let’s be behind him and then at the end of the season if he doesn’t qualify the team [for the Champions League] then I will understand if some people say we need a new manager.”

“But I don’t know if it will work. Personally I couldn’t believe the first game against [Manchester] City, the way we played, I was like, wow! All the players are passionate. Even if you bring an amazing tactician or big name, it didn’t work in the past.”

“Why we don’t have someone from the house? He knows the club, he’s really calm and he’s doing a good job.”

Evra explained that United don’t need to think too much about winning the Premier League next year as that is almost certainly out of reach for the current crop of players.

“Do we need someone to win straight away? Do we have the players to win the Premier League? That’s what I mean. Amorim, every player he bought, now we see the quality of those players, so Carrick is doing a good job with them. Give him a chance.”

Carrick and his players are next in action on Monday when they host Brentford.
