Patrick Dorgu’s best Manchester United position debated by Wes Brown | OneFootball

Patrick Dorgu is a “raw” talent who is “definitely here to stay”, according to Manchester United legend Wes Brown.

Brown, one of the club’s best ever centre-backs and full-backs, was speaking to The Peoples Person in an exclusive interview hosted by BetGoodwin.

Dorgu was bought by United as a wing-back to play in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, but under Michael Carrick’s 4-2-3-1, there is not an obvious place for him in the side. We asked Brown what he thinks the 21-year-old’s future role will be.

“Not a full-back”

“That’s a tough one for me because I’m not gonna lie, he’s not a fullback,” the treble winner stated. “He brings out the best of himself when he’s in an attacking area on that left-hand side, whether it’s a wing or coming inside.”

“He’s just got raw ability. And obviously we know — I didn’t know this for a long time – but he can shoot and he can shoot very well.”

“So lots of potential. I think definitely a player that Michael can use going forward. So much energy. He’s probably got the best energy up there with Bruno in the squad, actually. Quick, physically strong, and like I just said, he can score goals as well. So it’s, it’s going to be interesting, but he’s definitely here to stay.”

Dorgu’s best role

“Michael’s obviously got to try and find that best position, but I think it’s a little bit more forward,” Brown said. “Not necessarily where Cunha plays on the wing, but probably a touch more inside where he can cause a lot of havoc. But obviously then you would change the way we play a little bit, but then that could be another option.”

Is it worth changing the formation to accommodate him?

“Well, I think when he plays and in certain situations you can,” the former England man said. “I’m not saying he can’t play on the wing, he just looks more effective when he gets the ball and he drives inside, he’s playing one-twos, he’s got the ability, he’s got the speed to get on the end of things.”

“At some point he will be on the wing and he sees he can get past the player because he’s quick enough, he can get across it. But if you do that, you stifle his abilities around the box and scoring and hitting really long shots.”

“We’ll have to see more of him next year, but I’m glad we’ve got him and when he came back from injury,he really showed everybody what he can do – because I don’t think everybody knew that.”

Sadly, Dorgu’s Denmark did not qualify for the World Cup, so he is not in action in North America. That could be a blessing in disguise for United, though, who will go into the 2026/27 season with a fresh player ready to really make his mark on the Premier League stage.
