Sevilla’s future signing Patrik Mercado has suffered an injury that has put the club on alert, and he will not join Ecuador’s trip to Spain.

The 22-year-old Ecuador international has been secured for next summer from Independiente for six million, according to Superdeporte.

He was hurt early in a match after jumping to avoid a challenge, landing with both feet and being carried off on a stretcher. Medical tests will determine whether there is a serious issue.

He will miss the Morocco friendly at the Metropolitano on Friday 27 March, and the Netherlands fixture in Eindhoven four days later.

The move comes as Sevilla navigate the post-Monchi era.

Despite his age, Mercado is a key figure for the league leaders and already has more than 120 first-team appearances for Independiente.
