Fulham 1-2 Chelsea
Chelsea took the spoils in their west London derby trip to Fulham on Sunday, with Pedro Neto the hero with a clinical finish deep into stoppage time at Craven Cottage.
The victory means Chelsea remain in the thick of the fight for a Champions League spot for next season alongside Manchester City, Aston Villa and Nuno Espírito Santo’s Nottingham Forest.
Neto played the full match on the left side of Chelsea’s attack in Enzo Maresca’s 4-2-3-1 system. The former Braga man was regarded by many as the best player on the pitch, having been a lively presence before his ferocious winner in the 92nd minute completed a comeback win over Marco Silva’s side.
‘When I received the ball I just spun around and shot as hard as I can, and the ball went in,” Neto explained after the match. The first one [I shot] Leno did an unbelievable save and he said to me how unlucky I was. I was so frustrated that for the second one I had to put all the power in the ball. So I was happy that I could help the team and we got the three points.
‘It could be a good part of the season for us. We showed the character. To be honest I have no words to describe what this team has done. It’s not easy to spend all season in the top four and then be out of it before this game, but the character the team showed is really good. We have to think about Everton next week and winning against them too.
‘The belief has always been there, even in the bad moments. Everyone has bad moments and what you have to do is continue like this.”
All top 5 spots in the Premier League will earn a place in the Champions League for next season. This weekend’s results pushed Nuno’s surprise package Nottingham Forest down to 6th place, ahead of their game in-hand at Tottenham Hotspur on Monday night.
