Pedro offered sincere backing to new head coach Leonardo Jardim after starting in Flamengo’s win over Fluminense to seal their 40th Carioca crown.

On Sunday, 8 March, Flamengo beat their city rivals in the state final. According to Coluna Do Fla, Pedro spoke on the pitch about the significance of the triumph and the recent change in the dugout.

He said change is never easy and takes time, adding that Filipe Luís’ dismissal, which came right after an 8-0, was not expected. Over his six years at the club, he noted, the group have learned to handle pressure and difficult moments.

Pedro explained that Jardim began work with the squad on Tuesday, 3 March and is still getting to know the club’s daily routine. Despite limited training time, he stressed the squad are motivated and hopeful, and intend to embrace the coach in pursuit of a winning era.

At his unveiling, Jardim praised Pedro as a talented centre-forward with strong finishing, but he did not guarantee a permanent starting place or 90 minutes every match. He said he believes in Pedro’s qualities and that other shortcomings could be overcome with motivation and effort.

Flamengo now turn to the Brasileirão, hosting Cruzeiro at the Maracanã on Wednesday, 11 March at 21:30 Brasília time. They have four points from three rounds and need a win to reduce the gap to the leaders.
