Following Portugal’s last 16 exit and Roberto Martínez confirming his departure, A Bola reports that Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença is set to turn to Jorge Jesus as the leading candidate.

Portugal went out on Monday after defeat to Spain, the decisive goal arriving in stoppage time. The result ended Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup finals career and was Martínez’s final match in charge.

Post-match, Martínez said it was his last game for Portugal, thanked the Portuguese people for their support, and called the period an indescribable source of pride. His contract is close to expiry and will not be renewed by the federation.

Jesus, 71, formerly of Benfica, left Al Nassr after winning the Saudi league title and had previously made clear his wish to take the national team job.

The report adds that Proença is expected to meet Jesus after the squad return to Lisbon to discuss the succession.

Free of contract, Jesus could take charge immediately and lead into Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup. Portugal will be a co-host of the 2030 finals with Spain and Morocco.
