Pedro Sánchez has condemned racist abuse at Cornellà during Spain’s friendly with Egypt, calling the episode unacceptable and insisting an uncivil minority must not stain Spain’s plural, tolerant identity.

His message on X came after an early-morning statement from the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, which labelled the xenophobic behaviour at the stadium as absolutely unacceptable, according to El Periódico Mediterráneo.

The prime minister voiced support for the athletes targeted and praised supporters whose respectful conduct, he said, helps make the country better.

Sports minister Milagros Tolón added that sport is built on effort, work and talent, and also on respect, solidarity and coexistence, stressing that hate, racism and xenophobia have no place in stadiums or in society.

The government note underlined that such behaviour does not reflect the vast majority of Spain’s supporters, who understand sport as a space of respect and coexistence, and reaffirmed zero tolerance as an institutional duty and an irrenounceable democratic principle.
