  • Guardiola deflects question on his future with a characteristically witty “Have a lovely evening!”
  • Man City boss insists “the future is bright” after his side beat Chelsea in the FA Cup final
  • Catalan points to commitment in the squad and is “pretty sure” City will be there in the next years

Pep Guardiola has delivered the strongest hint yet that he will remain at Manchester City beyond this season, telling reporters after the FA Cup final win over Chelsea that “the future is bright“.

Manchester City beat Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday to win the FA Cup and complete a domestic double – adding to the Carabao Cup won in March – in what has been an impressive second half of the campaign for the Blues.

In the immediate aftermath of Saturday’s Wembley triumph, Guardiola was asked directly about the speculation surrounding his future – first by TNT Sports presenter Laura Woods on the pitch at Wembley – and then more formally in his post-match press conference.

Five Things Learned: Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City (FA Cup Final)

Pep on Man City exit rumours: “Have a lovely evening!”

Approached by Woods on the Wembley turf moments after the final whistle, the exchange was brief and entirely Guardiola.

“Pep, there are so many rumours aren’t there, about you leaving. You’re not are you?” Woods asked.

“What rumours?” Guardiola asked back.

“Rumours!” Woods pressed.

“Have a lovely evening!” Guardiola said and walked away with a smile.

The deflection was vintage Guardiola, playful enough to avoid a direct answer but conspicuously short of a denial. The manner in which he sidestepped the question rather than dismissing it outright will only fuel further speculation in the days ahead.

The future is bright, we will be there: Pep

In his post-match press conference, however, Guardiola’s words carried a rather different tone – one that pointed firmly towards continuity.

“The future is bright! I know the guys, I know how they feel, the commitment to the club, and their profession. I’m pretty sure we will be there. We will be there in the next years,” he added.

The language is notable. Guardiola does not say “I will be there” but “we will be there” – framing his confidence in the club’s future around the collective rather than himself alone.

Whether that distinction is meaningful or simply a reflection of how he speaks about the club at large is open to interpretation.

What is clear is that after a season in which City have won two domestic trophies and pushed Arsenal to the final stretch of the Premier League title race, the 55-year-old is not walking away from Wembley in a mood that suggests finality.

What does the FA Cup win mean for City’s season?

Saturday’s victory ends the season with silverware secured and the prospect of the title race going to a final-day showdown with Aston Villa still alive – a remarkable position for a club that spent much of the autumn well off the pace at the top of the table.

Bernardo Silva departs having lifted the trophy in what may have been his last game in sky blue, while the likes of Rayan Cherki, Nico O’Reilly and Jeremy Doku have announced themselves as the faces of the next era.

Whatever Guardiola ultimately decides about his future – a decision understood to be in the offing – he signs off on Saturday in the manner that has defined his decade at the Etihad Stadium. Winning. And smiling.
