Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has kept the door slightly ajar to a sensational u-turn on his future at the club, despite media reports indicating that an exit is imminent.
On the pitch, City saw their pursuit of reclaiming the league title shattered as a resilient Bournemouth side fought out a gruelling draw, mathematically handing the Premier League trophy to Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.
The pre-match atmosphere at the Vitality Stadium had been intensely compromised by explosive media claims that Pep Guardiola had already finalised a late-night farewell address to his first-team squad.
Despite falling behind to a brilliant first-half curling effort from Eli Junior Kroupi, Manchester City fought back to rescue a point via a late, clinical equaliser from Erling Haaland. However, the draw leaves the Blues four points adrift of North London with only a single fixture remaining, sealing a 2nd place finish on the pitch while triggering huge uncertainty off it.
As the club faces a summer transition under Sporting Director Hugo Viana, the Catalan tactician used his post-match press availability to somewhat push back against reports that his exit is an absolute certainty.
Speaking to Sky Sports immediately after City’s 1-1 draw against Bournemouth, Pep Guardiola was quizzed for the first time on media reports indicating that he would be leaving the Etihad Stadium after the final game of the season against Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.
“I could say that I have one more year of contract, and with the conversations I’ve had for many, many years, always from my experience when you announce – whatever you announce – during the competition is a bad, bad result,” Guardiola opened up by explaining.
“And like you understand, the first person I have to talk to is my chairman [Khaldoon Al Mubarak], because we both decided when we finish the season we will sit and we will talk. And it’s as simple as that, and after we will take the decision.”
But when pushed further on whether a decision was still truly dependent on conversations with the Manchester City chairman, Guardiola doubled-down by stating, “Listen, I have one more year of contract.
“I will not tell you [a decision] here because I have to talk with my chairman, with my players, with my staff because when we play for the FA Cup, qualification for the Champions League, the Premier League it’s just one thing in my mind and focus: Try to bring the team to the highest point. And it’s what we have done.”
The 55-year-old concluded, “I’m the happiest man on the planet to be in this club! This club is just extraordinary! Of course, the season is over for us.
“We wanted to arrive in the last game with our fans [competing], but I know they will come because they’ve seen in 10 seasons really good in many, many moments. “And that is what we have to do until the end.”
Over the last 48 hours, the most reputable of mainstream media outlets had heavily aligned on the premise that Chelsea’s former manager Enzo Maresca had already established an agreement to take over from Pep Guardiola this summer.
By publicly resetting his contractual timeline and emphasising his direct allegiance to Khaldoon Al Mubarak, Guardiola has somewhat reclaimed control over his narrative, leaving fans to wonder if a dramatic compromise could keep him in the dugout until 2027.
The immediate priority now shifts to Sunday’s final-day encounter against Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium, and while the match no longer possesses any mathematical title jeopardy, it will transform into an emotionally-charged atmosphere given the potential for it to be Pep Guardiola’s final match at the club.
Whether the post-match presentation serves as a concrete, definitive goodbye or a stepping stone toward a sensational contractual U-turn completely depends on a boardroom showdown scheduled to take place in the coming days.
