Pep Guardiola on key midfielder: "He reminds me of Messi & Mahrez"
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on Bernardo Silva following the midfielder’s standout performance in Champions League win over Villarreal.
The Portuguese international scored rare headed goal leading Guardiola to draw eye catching comparisons with Lionel Messi & Riyad Mahrez , two player he knows intimately.
Speaking after the match, Guardiola couldn’t hide his admiration for Silva’s technique & intelligence:
"Bernardo Silva scored beautiful header. He reminds me of Mahrez and even a little bit of Messi. They've hammers in their necks. They may be small in stature but their heading ability and timing are incredible"
The City boss once again referred to Silva as leader within the team while admitting the player has yet to communicate any decision about his long term future at the club:
"He hasn’t told me anything about his plans. He’s our captain , we love each other but I don’t know what he’ll decide"
Guardiola also reflected on Man City’s remarkable squad depth this season noting that the club is better equipped to handle the relentless schedule across all competitions.
"Look at the final 20 minutes , I could bring on Tijjani Reijnders, Oscar Bobb, Rayan Cherki and Omar Marmoush. Phil Foden was on the bench, Nathan Ake too and even Rayan Ait Nouri. When you want to compete for every trophy, you need squad this deep"
The Catalan coach contrasted this campaign with last season’s:
"Back then, we'd 13 or 14 player we relied on. After 70 minutes they were exhausted and we couldn’t rotate because another game was always 3 day away. Now the players feel stronger and more confident , we’re controlling games again".
