Domestic Treble chasers could be six points behind leaders Arsenal by the time they play Everton
Pep Guardiola insists that Rodri is “getting better” but says the Manchester City midfielder has still yet to resume training ahead of Monday night’s trip to Everton.
Rodri has not played since suffering a calf injury during the latter stages of last month’s crucial 2-1 home win over Premier League title rivals Arsenal, missing the subsequent win at relegated Burnley and last weekend’s FA Cup semi-final comeback victory against Southampton at Wembley.
Guardiola has continued to insist that the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner is progressing well with his recovery, but does not want to risk him returning too early and then potentially miss another extended period of time.
Rodri looks set to remain a doubt for Monday night’s visit to Everton, by which time City - who already have a game in hand - could be six points adrift at the top-flight summit with leaders Arsenal hosting Fulham at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening.
“He's getting better,” Guardiola said of Rodri at his pre-Everton press conference on Friday morning. “Still he didn't train with us, so we will see in the next days.”
Asked if he was confident that his compatriot would be ready for the game, the manager added: “Always I am confident.”
Also yet to resume City training before the Everton match is Ruben Dias, with the Portuguese centre-back having been sidelined with an ankle injury since the Champions League last-16 second-leg defeat by Real Madrid on March 17, sitting out the Carabao Cup final win over Arsenal.

Dias has missed the last six games in a row across all competitions, with Abdukodir Khusanov and Marc Guehi striking up an effective centre-back partnership in his absence before the fit-again John Stones - who, like captain Bernardo Silva, will leave City when his contract expires this summer - and Nathan Ake got the nod against Southampton in a rotated lineup.
Dias looks set to remain unavailable against Everton along with fellow defender Josko Gvardiol, who is still working his way back to fitness following surgery on a leg fracture suffered in the draw with Chelsea back in early January.
Asked about Dias on Friday, Guardiola said: “He's not yet with the team, but he's getting better; him, Josko and Rodri. They're getting better.”
