Pep Guardiola says he hopes Phil Foden will go on to stay at Manchester City for the remainder of his career – and believes the Academy graduate can also become a future club captain.
How can I watch Fulham v City on TV?
Foden’s brilliant brace against Leeds at the weekend not only helped seal a crucial 3-2 Premier League win but also maintained the England international’s stellar form across the season to date.
At the age of 25, the attacking midfielder is now entering what promises to be the prime years of a career that has already delivered so much since he first emerged on the senior scene as a teenager back in 2017.
And addressing the media at his pre-match press conference ahead of Tuesday night’s latest league trip to Fulham, the City boss said he saw no reason why Foden’s influence wouldn’t continue to further grow looking to the long term.
“Hopefully he can stay all his career here. He’s a special player, a Man City fan from the Academy, there are no doubts on that,” Guardiola said.
“[In terms of becoming a captain] If he wants to become one, yeah.
“But captains come from themselves and their behaviour on and off the pitch. It depends on him.

“On the pitch he’s always been like that [a leader]. He’s not a guy to talk much in the dressing room but on the pitch, he never hides behind the scenes or what’s going on.
“He always took responsibility from day one, he has an incredible presence on the pitch.”
That Leeds double took Foden’s tally of goals in all competitions this season to six.
And for the boss, such is Foden’s quality and eye for an opportunity, he said he saw no reason why he couldn’t go on and look to approach 20 goals across the campaign in total to help boost City’s quest for success.
“He’s done it in the past,” Pep pointed out.
“The year we won the last Premier League title and made it four in a row he was the best player.
“I don’t know how many goals he scored but he had a lot.
“The success isn’t just the strikers but especially the wingers and attacking midfielders
“Gundo [Ilkay Gundogan] scored a lot of goals in our Treble year, so we need that.”
