Pep Guardiola says City will monitor the fitness of Rayan Cherki ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg at home to Newcastle.

Addressing the media at Tuesday’s pre-match press conference, the boss also confirmed that Ruben Dias – who has been sidelined for the past month – returned to training yesterday.

However he added that Jeremy Doku remained sidelined.

French playmaker Cherki came off in the second half of Sunday’s 2-2 Premier League draw at Spurs with a knock.

But Guardiola said he would monitor the French international’s fitness at Tuesday’s training session.

“Rayan had a knock and we will see today how he feels,” Pep said.

“Ruben started to train yesterday but Jeremy not [ready] yet.”

Alongside Doku, Josko Gvardiol, John Stones, Savinho and Mateo Kovacic all remain unavailable for selection as they continue their recovery from injury.

Marc Guéhi is also unavailable for the Etihad clash as he is ineligible.

City will go into Wednesday’s game holding a 2-0 advantage from last month’s first leg at St James’ Park.

The Blues have a fine pedigree in the League Cup.

We have won the famous trophy on eight occasions – and secured four consecutive victories under Guardiola between 2018 and 2021.

And for the boss, the incentive of another trip to Wembley was a huge incentive for his players.

“We have the chance to make a fifth final in 10 years,” said Pep.

“A good result I would prefer to start with 2-0.

“I know perfectly Eddie Howe and the times we played against Newcastle and the pride they have.

“A Champions League team and we have to be prepared.

“See how the players recovered from a tough game at Spurs and play our game for our people and fans and try to reach Wembley in March.”
