Phil Foden scored just two minutes into Manchester City’s opening game at the Club World Cup and has declared that he is ready to get back to his best.
Foden was involved in both goals, scoring and assisting for Jeremy Doku as City recorded a 2-0 victory over Moroccan side Wydad AC. His performance earned him the man of the match award as the Blues got off to a winning start in Philadelphia.
Speaking to DAZN after the match, the Englishman declared: “New season, fresh me.”
Following an incredible 2023/24 campaign, Foden struggled to reach the same heights last season. He continued: “Keep training well and being the best version of me, and hopefully I can perform like this every game.
“Very happy to start the tournament with a win.
“It was difficult at times with the heat, we’re not used to it so we had to keep the ball a little more and be more patient.
“Fair play to them, a top team on the counter, caused a lot of chances that we had to deal with.
“Happy with the performance and the three points.”
Pep Guardiola’s side will travel to Atlanta to face Al-Ain from the UAE next, before facing Juventus in the final group game.
The Catalan manager had a chance to look at some of his new signings for the first time this afternoon. Frenchman Rayan Cherki and Dutchman Tijjani Reijnders both made their City debuts, whilst Algerian Rayan Ait-Nouri was an unused substitute.
Reijnders particularly impressed in central midfield and looked to slot into the team with ease.
City’s new recruits will be competing with Foden for minutes, especially Cherki who plays in a similar position to the Englishman.
Despite this, Foden insisted: “They’re all top players, they’ve settled in very well, and just excited to keep playing with them.”
