The Norwich City boss was over the moon following a strong performance against West Brom

Philippe Clement has said the Norwich City fans’ reaction to their 5-0 win over West Brom was a “good sign”.

It was an assured performance from the Canaries at the Hawthorns, with five different players getting on the scoresheet in the Tuesday night meeting.

The result means that new Baggies boss Eric Ramsay has now overseen the conceding of eight goals in his first two games as boss, after replacing Ryan Mason.

He may look towards Clement for inspiration, who had a similarly rough start to life in the Championship, but turned an audible corner on Tuesday night.

Such an assured performance, especially away from home, is always likely to get the fans on board, and that was precisely the case at the Hawthorns for Norwich.

Their fans could be heard chanting Clements’ name through the contest and asking for a wave from the Belgian coach, a request that went unanswered despite the positive mood.

“That’s the thing, they need to get to know me also,” Clement told the press after the final whistle.

“I will never wave during a game, I don’t think it’s respectful towards an opponent.”

That doesn’t, however, mean that Clement didn’t appreciate the sentiment.

He clarified: “But I will always do it after the game, and I’m really happy.

“Of course, it’s a good sign as a manager when they sing your name.

“There are also moments when they yell at you when you lose games, and it’s less nice, so that’s our life.

“So, I prefer this situation.”

The result could prove huge for Norwich City

That win took them two points clear of the dropzone, albeit Portsmouth have a considerable three games in hand on the Canaries, with Blackburn Rovers, wedged between the two, also with one game in hand.

Nevertheless, points are not flying in thick and fast at that end of the table, so a two-point cushion is still a big advantage.

Not to mention that this win makes it four wins from five in all competitions for Norwich so far in this calendar year, with an eye-catching victory over table-climbers Wrexham.

The way Clement has kicked off 2026 could be all the momentum Norwich need to ensure their survival, which won’t feel like much of a victory for fans, but given where they were when the Belgian took over, it is all that can be asked of him for now.

Eric Ramsay may take comfort from Philippe Clement

As Clement points out though, it has not been all sunshine and rainbows for him since his appointment in November.

He started his new job with a horrible 4-1 loss against newly-promoted Birmingham City, erasing any hopes of profiting off the new manager bounce.

It was a deflating start to the new tenure, something Ramsay will be able to relate to with the Baggies.

A last-minute loss to Middlesbrough and a thrashing from a relegation battler is about as bleak a start as you could think of for the Welshman, but Clement shows that corners can be turned after a poor start.
