Philippe Montanier and Saint-Étienne will not continue together.
According to L'Équipe, the coach’s deal runs to the end of June and no agreement was found to extend his stay.
Montanier, 61, arrived in February after Eirik Horneland’s departure. He was unable to take the Verts into the top two of Ligue 2, the automatic promotion places.
A spring sequence of three defeats, 0-2 against Bastia, 0-3 against Troyes and 1-2 at Rodez, proved decisive, with Le Mans taking second place and securing promotion.
Saint-Étienne then lost to Nice in the promotion play-off, drawing 0-0 before a 1-4 reverse, so they remain in Ligue 2.
The club are targeting a return to the top flight next season and have been seeking a new coach for a week.
