Manchester City are closing in on welcoming back their former Academy goalkeeper Pierce Charles from Sheffield Wednesday, it is being reported.
Following a transitional phase between the posts over the last 12 months, with Gianluigi Donnarumma taking the No.1 position from James Trafford and Ederson, sporting director Hugo Viana has made it a core priority to safeguard the club’s depth.
The need for a highly capable, modern ball-playing goalkeeper has intensified as James Trafford fields Premier League interest from the likes of Newcastle United and Tottenham, paving the way for a replacement to enter.
Pierce Charles represents a calculated acquisition by Manchester City’s recruitment department, with the 20-year-old having left the Etihad for Hillsborough in 2021 to secure senior development and quickly progressing to the starting No.1 role for Northern Ireland.
Despite Sheffield Wednesday enduring a difficult 2025/26 campaign that culminated in relegation to League One, Charles emerged as a bright spot, posting elite short-passing completion metrics that fit seamlessly into Enzo Maresca’s expected tactical vision.
Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, Pierce Charles has agreed to return to Manchester City this summer and a deal is now in place with League One side Sheffield Wednesday.
Additional reporting from talkSPORT’s Ben Jacobs and Alex Crook states that should a deal be completed between City and Wednesday for the Northern Ireland international, then Charles is ‘likely’ to be sent out on loan from the Etihad Stadium for the 2026/27 season.
Rather than allowing the 20-year-old international to potentially stall within the club’s Academy once again, should Trafford opt to stay, Manchester City’s loan department may evaluate competitive landing spots in the EFL Championship or City Football Group clubs.
Any planned development loan would ensure Pierce Charles continues to accumulate top-level senior minutes under high-pressure conditions while remaining tethered to the Premier League giants as a long-term succession candidate.
Manchester City remain clearly positioned to formally confirm any homecoming for Pierce Charles well before Enzo Maresca’s senior squad travels for their summer pre-season tour in Asia, with matches against Inter, K League All-Stars, and Atletico Madrid.
