Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will miss Gabon’s AFCON 2025 opener against Cameroon on 24 December at 21:00. The Gabonese federation announced the Marseille striker’s absence on Monday.

The 36-year-old suffered the issue against Monaco on Sunday, a 1-0 match, and was replaced in the 86th minute after pain at the back of his left thigh. After consultation between Marseille and Gabon medical staff, he will remain in Marseille for treatment.

Aubameyang has 84 caps and 39 goals for Gabon. The finals run from 21 December to 18 January.

A return against Mozambique on 28 December is possible, depending on clinical and imaging progress. If he is not ready, he could feature against Côte d’Ivoire on 31 December. Gabon share a demanding group with Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, the reigning champions, and Mozambique.

Gabon are also without Metz centre-back Michel Mboula, sidelined by a thigh problem since late September. There are reservations about his involvement at that level and he had only just resumed with the reserves. Initially called up by Thierry Mouyouma, he should be replaced by Dordrecht’s Yannis M’Bemba if a tournament-long absence is confirmed.
