Talks lasted several days, with rival clubs entering the race, including a major Saudi side whose written offer was rejected, before a definitive agreement was reached on Sunday.

The 47-year-old finished second in Ligue 1 and won the Coupe de France this season with RC Lens. His Palace salary will be nearly four times what he earned in Ligue 1, which was €100,000 gross per month. Lens will receive €3m this summer plus €2m in bonuses, including one guaranteed if the London club remain in the Premier League.

Palace’s pre-season begins on 10 July, with 13 players on World Cup duty. Sage could reunite with Lens quickly, as both clubs are entered in the Como Cup, a friendly tournament on Lake Como, from 28 July to 1 August.
