Pierre Sage has been named Ligue 1 Coach of the Year at the UNFP awards after sealing RC Lens’s return to the Champions League.

According to L'Équipe, the 47-year-old was chosen by his peers on Monday, becoming the club’s fourth winner after Daniel Leclercq in 1998, Joël Müller in 2002 and Franck Haise in 2023.

Appointed last summer, the former Lyon coach clinched qualification on Friday with a 1-0 home victory over Nantes.

Under Sage, Lens have won 21 of 32 league matches, with four draws and seven defeats, and pushed PSG for much of the campaign.

Speaking last week about his nomination, Sage said his stance on individual awards is unchanged, viewing them as recognition of a collective effort.

He could also deliver a first Coupe de France for Lens in the final on 22 May against OGC Nice.
