A new feature, ‘Pioneras: Solo querían jugar’, revisits the young women who launched women’s football in Spain in the early 1970s, under Franco. Backed by a visionary promoter, it charts their fight against prejudice and offers a long overdue tribute.

“I learned about the pioneers through the producer, until then I had never heard of them. When we began researching and discovering what these women had lived through, what they faced simply for wanting to play football, I realised it was a story that deserved to be told.” she told EL PERIÓDICO.

“It has been a complex and very beautiful process, from speaking to the real pioneers to build the script to the work with the crew and cast. I was facing the challenge of recreating the early 70s and filming football scenes, which are very complex. We are very proud of how it has turned out, the result of every department’s effort.”

“It is important to keep memory, to know where we come from and how we have got here, so we do not repeat the past and do not take a step back. The film speaks about breaking moulds and the social feat behind the sporting excuse, how the obstacles those young girls faced reflect the machismo of the time.”

“I played football as a child in the school playground and really loved it, but I stopped because there was no women’s team in Ronda. I often felt more a guest than part of the sport, now I feel this film has reconciled me with football. This film seeks to pay them the tribute they never had and so richly deserve.”
