Palmeiras enter a decisive final week before the World Cup pause, with Piquerez and Sosa racing to make Uruguay and Paraguay squads.
Piquerez has been sidelined since late March after injuring his right ankle in Uruguay’s friendly against England. According to Globo.com, he had surgery, worked with the academy group on ball drills, then was released to finish rehabilitation under the Uruguayan federation from Monday.
Sosa suffered a ligament injury to his left ankle a week ago. He left the Cruzeiro match struggling to walk, but the scare was bigger than the problem, which is being treated conservatively without surgery.
His recovery has been positive, so there is hope he could be named by Paraguay even if he does not feature for Palmeiras this week. He began his physical transition on the squad’s return, with three more sessions before Junior Barranquilla that will be pivotal for clearance by the club’s health and performance unit.
Palmeiras have no Brazil call-ups, yet there are at least seven potential selections for other national teams. Those chosen would be released before Sunday’s meeting with Chapecoense, which should leave the side depleted.
They will also be without the suspended Carlos Miguel, Andreas Pereira and Giay, adding to the Brasileiro leaders’ problems against the bottom club.
