Paris Saint-Germain would retain their UEFA Super Cup trophy as they defeated Aston Villa 2-1. 

The Match

It would take a little time for the game to come alive, as PSG and Aston Villa tested one another. It would be Les Parisiens who would begin to exert control as they found their usual rhythm, pinging the ball around and rotating positions in mesmeric fluid patterns. 

Désiré Doué would create the first clear-cut chance of the evening, firing at close range and forcing a reflex save from Marco Bizot. The Dutch goalkeeper wouldn’t be able to do anything a short while later when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia drifted into the box, created a tight pocket of space with his quick feet and then picked his spot to give PSG the opener. 

PSG likely should have made it two when Kvaratskhelia released Nuno Mendes down the left. PSG players were lining up in the box, but somehow Mendes’s slipped cross couldn’t find a receiver. It was a let-off that allowed Villa to grow into the game. 

The 17-year-old Brian Madjo was given chance after chance to level the scores. It looked as if it wasn’t going to be his night, when on the stroke of halftime, he fought off Willian Pacho to cushion John McGinn’s cross past Matvey Safonov. 

McGinn was denied six minutes into the second half, when Madjo played him through. The pass lacked a touch of pace on it, allowing PSG just enough time to recover. Momentum was with Villa at the start of the second half, but PSG would restore the lead in the 62nd minute. 

A lovely pass from Ousmane Dembélé allowed Doué to slip past the Villa backline and place his shot past Bizot. Villa thought the offside flag would save them, in what looked like a tight call, but VAR saw that Matty Cash was playing the France international onside. Warren Zaïre-Emery would maintain PSG’s lead with a vital block to deny João Gomes. 

PSG would hold onto their lead in a stretched final push where fatigue set in for both teams. Emiliano Buendía at the death would have one final chance to level the scores, but he couldn’t put his header on target.

A really bright first half an hour, where he looked completely unplayable. However, after that he faded somewhat.

Not a very impactful debut from the former AS Monaco man. He swapped positions well and looked lively in build-up, but was anonymous when it came time for PSG to attack the final third. Replaced at half-time by Ousmane Dembélé (5).
