UEFA Champions League, Matchday 5, 26/11/2025
Vitinha led the way as Paris Saint-Germain came back twice from a goal down to beat Tottenham Hotspur in an end-to-end encounter, claiming their fourth win in five Champions League fixtures this season.
Three weeks after an eventful defeat to Bayern Munich, the injury-hit European champions looked to bounce back in a rematch of this summer UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham Hotspur. With Ousmane Dembélé only just making his return to the bench and Désiré Doué sidelined, Luis Enrique trusted the 18-year-old academy graduate Quentin Ndjantou to lead the line against the Premier League side.
Les Parisiens predictably dominated the opening exchanges, but were mostly limited to shots from range by the Spurs defence. By the twenty-minute mark, a long-distance strike from Fabián Ruiz had been followed by an effort from the left wing by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, both going wide of the post.
As the half went on, PSG increased their share of possession but continued to struggle to find the target. It was the visitors who eventually found a way through, as Richarlison headed into an empty net after Bergvall’s cross was sent back across goal by Randal Kolo Muani.
Luis Enrique’s men would conjure up a response on the stroke of half-time. Having struggled to thread their way into the box, the hosts scored through a long-distance effort — a first-time finish from Vitinha, catching Ndjantou’s pass at the perfect moment. The strike, which went in off the bar, appeared to reinvigorate the reigning champions just before the break.
Having assisted the opener, Kolo Muani would put his parent club behind again just after the break. With the goal again left open by a stranded Chevalier, Willian Pacho was left to parry a looping header off the line and into the path of the French striker. His thunderous shot, already bound for the roof of the net, was turned in by Marquinhos.
There would be an instant response from the hosts, though. Vitinha again stepped up to curl in his second equaliser of the evening, this time slightly inside the box, after Kvaratskhelia had cut inside from the left. Minutes later, the hosts would veer ahead as Fabián Ruiz foud himself in a one-on-one duel with Guglielmo Vicario, with the Spaniard confidently slotting past the goalkeeper from close-range. Willian Pacho would then make the most of some confusion in the box from a corner to double PSG’s lead, scoring his second Champions League goal this season.
The champions were not entirely home and dry, though. With twenty minutes to go, Randal Kolo Muani latched onto a ball which had been lost by Vitinha, before beating two defenders and emphatically beating Chevalier. The Portuguese midfielder instantly had the chance to make up for the error, though, and converted from the spot shortly afterwards after a handball in the Spurs box.
Lucas Chevalier, 4
Warren Zaïre-Emery, 6
Marquinhos, 5 – The goal PSG conceded were mostly down to collective defensive frailties rather than glaring individual errors. The Brazilian was partly at fault for the first goal, but was unfortunate to turn Kolo Muani’s shot into his own net for Tottenham’s second. An other solid performance from the captain on his 500th appearance for the club.
Willian Pacho, 6
Nuno Mendes, 5
João Neves, 7
Vitinha, 9 – The hat-trick hero of the evening, with the only blot in his copybook being the ball he lost in midfield which led to Kolo Muani’s second.
Fabián Ruiz, 7
Quentin Ndjantou, 5 – In his first Champions League start, the 18-year-old turned in a dynamic and serviceable display. He linked up well with teammates, assisting Vitinha’s first goal, but struggled to beat defenders and came across few goalscoring opportunities.
Bradley Barcola, 4 – The French international’s goal drought on the European stage rarely looked like ending on Wednesday night. Like the rest of the front three, Barcola was lacking involvement and incisivenness, and his contributions were mostly limited to keeping spells of possession ticking over.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, 6
Guglielmo Vicario, 3
Randal Kolo Muani, 8
Richarlison, 6
