Rayo Vallecano would secure a narrow advantage in the first leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League clash with RC Strasbourg Alsace following Alemão’s second-half header.

The Match

It was no surprise that two debutant European semi-finalists played out a cagey game. From the opening exchanges, the game struggled to fall into a rhythm, with both sides willing to go to ground and break up the other’s flow; a situation helped by a referee who was all too eager to put mouth to whistle. Clear-cut chances were at a premium in the first half. Alemão and Emanuel Emegha had close-range headers at either end, but neither striker could get their effort on target. And neither side were able to manage an effort on target.

Tensions off the ball were rising throughout and threatened to spill over in a few flashpoints. At a corner, Diego Moreira was lucky to walk away without a booking when he reacted with a jab in the back to something his opposite number, Pep Chavarría, said. Pathé Ciss saw yellow when Emegha ran into his arm and suffered a head injury. At the half-time whistle, tempers again flared when Emegha returned some stick he received off the Rayo fans, but the two squads were separated before anything meaningful could be said or done.

The match would spark into life after the restart when Isi Palazón fired the first shot on target. However, the effort was hit directly at Mike Penders. Despite this, the goalkeeper still made a hash of the save, but reacted quickly to deny Alemão from latching onto the follow-up. The pressure was building from the hosts, and they would soon have their reward. Isi’s corner found Alemão at the near post, who headed home to give Rayo the lead.

It felt like one-way traffic in the second half as Strasbourg struggled to build any meaningful attacks, with Rayo pinning them back. Strasbourg had a penalty shout when VAR looked at a high boot from Florian Lejeune on Andrew Omobamidele, but there would be no rub of the green from the boys in blue. Lejeune almost had a chance to settle the match a few minutes from regulation time, when he ghosted away from Sebastian Nanasi to get a free header on goal, but Penders was quick to react.

Strasbourg Player Ratings

Mike Penders, 6

A couple of tricky moments, but the goalkeeper more than made up for it with his quick reflexes that helped keep the scoreline narrow ahead of an important second leg.

Ben Chilwell, 5

Ismaël Doukouré, 7

The strongest of the centre-back pairing. Strasbourg generally defended well in this match, denying their hosts many clear-cut opportunities at goal. And a lot of that has to do with the way Doukouré was able to marshal the defence.

Andrew Omobamidele, 6

Lucas Høgsberg, 4

A couple of blind clearances from the centre-back-cum-right-back that worked only to put his team under pressure. He looked like the weak link in the Strasbourg back four.

Samir El Mourabet, 3

The midfielder picked up an early yellow card and was lucky not to receive a second in the second half following a blatant foul. As it turns out, he likely would have made more of a difference if he weren’t on the pitch for Rayo’s goal-scoring corner routine, at least then they might have had a more effective marker on Alemão. The midfielder was meant to be marking the goal scorer, but allowed him a header under minimal pressure at the near post.

Abdoul Ouattara, 4

Martial Godo, 4

Julio Enciso, 4

Diego Moreira, 3

A game where it looked like he lost his cool early on and struggled to recentre himself and refind his focus. A lot of rash decisions both in and out of possession. The winger struggled to assert himself in a game he played constantly on the edge.

Emanuel Emegha, 4
