Manchester United u21s cruised past Rochdale to pick up their first win in the National League Cup.
Here are our player ratings for the match. Read the detailed match report of all the action here.
(A score of 6 is around average)
Will Murdock – 6.5 – Had little to do but claimed a few whipped crosses on the rare occasions he was called into action.
James Overy – 6.5 – Linked well with Mantato down the right wing with some good movements in the final third, particularly early in the match. Defensively wasn’t troubled and made an important tackle in the box in the second half.
Jacob Devaney – 7.5 – Dealt with everything that came his way with relative ease and was usually the one to cut out the rare Rochdale attacks whether it was blocking a cross or heading away from set pieces. Also showed his versatility by stepping into midfield and looking to get on the ball.
Godwill Kukonki – 6.5 – Showed his physical prowess by pushing around senior opposition and played some good passes into the forward line.
Diego Leon – 6 – Had a couple of charging runs forward but ended them with a wild shot and a poor touch that lost him the open space.
Finley McAllister – 6 – Showed a good understanding with Devaney, knowing when to hold his position and cover when Devaney pushed out from the back. Only let himself down with a couple of sloppy passes.
Jayce Fitzgerald – 6.5 – Looked like he could be the one to ignite a spark in what was a lifeless match, with his dynamic dribbling in the middle of the park. But he often got fouled just as he was running away with it.
Bendito Mantato – 6.5 – Dangerous when he got the ball out on the right wing, had the beating of his marker and got to the byline for a cutback or got a shot off every time he received the ball. But he just wasn’t fed the ball enough when it should have been going out to him straight away.
Jim Thwaites – 7 – His hard work in the press created the first goal and he was willing to put himself about defensively even when he was physically weaker than his opponent. On the ball, his deliveries into the box were as good as ever and he played some delightful diagonal balls out to the wings. But he could have forced it a bit more through central areas at times rather than favouring switches to the wings.
James Scanlon – 6.5 – Showed a great bit of quality when he knocked the ball over the defender and then ran into the box. But he then drifted through the match until the final minute, when he scored his goal.
Chido Obi – 7 – Took his goal excellently with a first time finish and had a few good bits of link up play including a nice diagonal ball out to the right wing.
Albert Mills – 6 – Slotted into the backline and didn’t look out of place.
Victor Musa – 6.5 – Did well to find space on the right wing and grabbed an assist off the bench, could have potentially had more if he was a bit more direct.
Tyler Fletcher – 6.5 – Played an excellent one-touch pass in the lead up to Scanlon’s goal and had a few more quick passes, but also fell into the slow tempo of the match.
Jack Fletcher – 6 – Kept the ball ticking in midfield as United controlled the match but didn’t stamp any authority during his short time on the pitch.
Gabriele Biancheri – N/A – Wasn’t on the pitch for long, controlled a long ball nicely on the chest but was incorrectly called for handball.
