One player who has been a constant for Manchester City this season is Josko Gvardiol. Amidst Manchester City’s injury crisis at the back, the Croatian international has been ever-present for his team. Pep Guardiola praised Gvardiol for his efforts yesterday, but looking ahead, perhaps the versatile defender should move to centre-back to help make his team a more dangerous proposition going forward and in possession.

Speaking ahead of Manchester City’s clash with Leicester City Pep Guardiola was full of praise for Gvardiol’s efforts this season. In a season where City’s defenders have consistently battled injury, Gvardiol has always been available for his team. Speaking on the Croatian international’s efforts he told the media: “I’m lucky that Josko is a real warrior. He has been there all season. I cannot imagine what would happen without him. I am grateful and appreciate his focus to be ready all the time.

Josko Gvardiol has shown his value to Manchester City this season. He has been City’s constant at the back and his efforts at left-back should be commended. He has always been available for his team and his contribution has been invaluable. But he could have one more valuable contribution to make.

At halftime of Manchester City’s 2-1 win over Bournemouth on Sunday, Josko Gvardiol moved across to centre-back. This move allowed Nico O’Reilly to slot in at left-back and he put in a man-of-the-match performance to help City progress in the FA Cup. But the move of Gvardiol to centre-back facilitated this. He also offered plenty in possession by allowing Pep Guardiola to have a left footed centre-back playing on the left of City’s two centre-backs. Gvardiol’s technical ability was also crucial in City’s second half dominance of Bournemouth. It’s a move that does have merit to stick with going forward.

Summary.

If Josko Gvardiol plays at centre-back it could allow Nico O’Reilly the opportunity to play more often. That’s a win for Manchester City and O’Reilly’s development. But it also allows Manchester City the option of having Gvardiol’s immense technical ability added to their build up play in a role where they need him. Gvardiol has been a warrior this season for Manchester City. But he could become even more valuable over the final stages of this season if he steps in at centre-back to end the season.
