Plymouth Argyle’s women have been told en masse they will be released when their contracts expire next month, with most notified by email, despite a standout season.
The team finished second in the Women's National League Southern Premier, the third tier, to reach the promotion play-offs. They then made the final, losing 1-0 to Wolverhampton.
Plymouth also lifted the County Cup and reached the FA Women's National League Cup final, where they were beaten 1-0 by Bournemouth.
Players criticised the manner of the communication, describing the email as cold and impersonal, which offered no chance for open, honest and meaningful dialogue. They also argued that public recognition from the FA Women's National League for helping the women's game to grow contrasted with dismantling the side and cutting funding.
The club said in a statement that it is preparing for another season in the Women's National League Southern Premier and cited financial costs far higher than expected. Head coach Marie Hourihan had been informed of the decision, later chose to leave, and had been tasked with telling the players of the non-renewals before the email was sent.
