Police and the council have opposed a Seaham bar’s plan to open until three am after England’s World Cup match against Panama on Saturday, June 27.

According to Sunderland Echo, Grace Kelly’s Irish bar on North Terrace has lodged a Temporary Event Notice to extend opening hours and alcohol sales following the group stage fixture.

The venue is licensed to serve until midnight and remain open until 12.30am. Officers noted the 10pm kick-off means the match would conclude within existing hours, so they argued there was no licensing need for an extension.

Durham Constabulary and the council’s environmental health team objected, saying the plan could undermine objectives to prevent crime and disorder and public nuisance. PC Gavin Rutter said police had not been given clear justification or measures to manage risks from patrons staying into the early hours.

The force also warned the later finish could increase alcohol-related crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour. The council’s licensing sub-committee meets on Thursday to decide whether applicant Rebecca Coulthard’s event can proceed or whether to issue a counter-notice.
