There was trouble following the Sky Blues' goalless draw with the Owls on Saturday afternoon

Coventry City's chance to secure their return to the Premier League after 25 years away on Saturday afternoon was halted by a spirited performance by already relegated Sheffield Wednesday.

A record attendance at the Coventry Building Society Arena of 31,647 was packed in, mostly to try and see the Sky Blues gain an expected win against the Owls, whose struggles this season both on and off the pitch have been clear for all to see.

Languishing on minus points at the bottom of the Championship, the Owls would have been tipped by many to be on the end of a comprehensive beating - but that's not quite how things panned out.

Frank Lampard's side had 15 shots and six on target compared to Wednesday's six shots with none on target, but they failed to beat Northern Ireland international stopper Pierce Charles in-between the visitors' sticks.

The stalement meant that Coventry will need to wait to secure their passage back to England's top flight - they're 12 points ahead of third-placed Millwall with four matches to play, meaning a point is needed this coming Friday night away at Blackburn Rovers to make their Premier League spot secure.

West Midlands Police issue statement over post-Coventry City 0-0 Sheffield Wednesday incident

The aftermath of Cov's goalless draw with Sheffield Wednesday though is refusing to go away.

Footage emerged on social media following the match which saw a group of people seemingly attacking a sole individual, which was captioned '12 Coventry City fans ambushing a Sheffield Wednesday fan' - people in the footage after the altercation could be heard shouting 'Sky Blue Army'.

And it looks as though the video evidence that was captured was indeed after the clash at the CBS Arena at nearby Sydnall Road - a 0.4 mile walk from the complex - with West Midlands Police now investigating the incident.

“We are investigating after a man was assaulted following an altercation with a group of people near Sydnall Road in Coventry on Saturday (April 11)," West Midlands Police said, via CoventryLive.

“We are aware of a video circulating social media and understand the concern it has caused and are reviewing it as part of the investigation.

“Anyone with information is asked to get in touch with us via Live Chat on our website or by calling 101, quoting crime reference number 20/209841/26.”

Coventry City need to focus on footballing matters again on Friday night vs Blackburn Rovers

The footage linked to the incident is an unsettling watch, and isn't something that is needed to be connected to the game of football, with the Police quite rightly looking into it given the severity of the incident.

Coventry though have to also focus on the footballing side of things as well as investigating the incident, as they need just one solitary point to confirm their Premier League spot when they travel to Ewood Park to take on Blackburn Rovers, and they'll be backed by a sold out away end of over 7,000.

Rovers will not be an easy customer to figure out, having been unbeaten in their last five matches prior to their Tuesday night clash with Southampton, but the finishing line is very much still in sight for Lampard and his squad.
