Portsmouth have been urged to try and re-sign Hull City winger Abu Kamara in this summer transfer window.

Portsmouth are preparing themselves to be ambitious in the 2026-27 Championship season with some intriguing moves being made in the summer transfer window.

Having won the League One title in the 2023-24 campaign, Pompey have since managed to stave off relegation in successive seasons under the management of John Mousinho.

Survival has been the goal first and foremost in each of their seasons back in the Championship after a lengthy absence from the top two divisions of English football.

This summer now looks as though it is the time for the club to take a step forward, having brought in Odin Bailey and Eoin Kenny from Stockport County and Dundalk respectively, but linked with some other fairly big money moves.

Almeria forward Marko Milovanovic, also known as Marezi, is reportedly close to a £5.1 million move with Pompey also said to be close to signing Rocco Shein for a fee of £2.1 million with interest also in Jesper Ceesay, Mate Tuboly and, as exclusively revealed by FLW, Josh Key.

Having gained promotion to the top-flight, Hull City have a lot of players that will likely be moved on this summer and one of those is winger Abu Kamara.

Kamara spent the 2023-24 League One season on loan at Pompey from Norwich City before Hull signed him for what has been an underwhelming stint in the East Riding of Yorkshire since then.

As the summer heats up, it could well be a former Pompey player also returns to Fratton Park this summer and that is something that would be welcomed by FLW’s Pompey Fan Pundit Miltos Ioannidis.

Miltos says: “With how open Richard Hughes was when talking about him, I can only imagine we are interested and we are in for him, given the circumstances are right.

“Obviously, I don’t think Hull will be looking to make a profit on Abu Kamara or anything like that but given they have been promoted to the Premier League, Kamara doesn’t really have a path to make it to the first-team now.

“They will look to maximise their asking price for him. Obviously, he is still a very talented youngster with a very good season in a League One winning team under his belt.

“We know him, given his affiliation with us, and I think that if the circumstances are right then I would be absolutely buzzing with the prospect of him coming back to the club.

“His career development, I wouldn’t say he has stalled but certainly he hasn’t hit the heights of what he was possibly anticipating over the last couple of seasons.

“Sometimes a young player just needs an environment where he feels very settled where he can get the best out of himself and can develop nicely.

“So, I think, like we have mentioned many times, we are now starting to target players from a group for a more significant, for our standards, transfer fee.

“Transfer fees for players that are really highly regarded across the whole of Europe and Abu Kamara will still require some money.

“If I was to make an estimation then I think approximately the £2 million to the £2.5 million mark would be an approximate number. Obviously, Hull paid close to £5 million in 2024. They are not making anything close to that.

“If we can manage to get him in and provide the team with some much-needed depth in that right-sided position then I think that would be great news for both parties and lets see how that develops.

“But I think from the way in which Richard Hughes spoke about Abu Kamara, how open he was speaking about him rather than just playing down any rumours and saying there was nothing in it at all, then I think there is every reason to be optimistic that he could be on the cards.”

Abu Kamara would be a good signing for Portsmouth

In League One, Abu Kamara showed some real quality as he helped Pompey win the League One title and, perhaps now regrettably, earned a move to Hull.

At the time, it appeared as though it was natural progression for the Norwich academy graduate but he struggled to make an impression at the MKM Stadium.

Last season saw him loaned out La Liga side Getafe but he wasn’t registered by the Spanish club for the second half of the season as they achieved UEFA Europa Conference League qualification under the management of Jose Bordalas.

Now Kamara will surely be keen on finding a move where his talent can once again be nurtured to flourish and where better than a return to where he first began to make his name as a professional, Pompey.
