Sporting and Braga wins have lifted Portugal in UEFA’s seasonal ranking, overtaking Italy and keeping alive hopes of an extra Champions League place in 2026/27. The surge has also cut the gap to Germany in third and to Spain in second, the final position that grants the extra berth.
According to O Jogo, Portuguese clubs added 1,300 points this week, taking the 2025/26 total to 18,300, and are the top scorers so far this week.
Sporting’s rout of Bodo/Glimt delivered two points for the win and 1.5 for reaching the quarter-finals, a 3.5 return worth 0.700 on the national coefficient.
Braga’s 4-0 victory over Ferencváros earned two points plus one for qualification, contributing 0.600 to Portugal’s ranking.
Porto can still add to the tally, they host Stuttgart in the Europa League second leg after a 2-1 win in Germany. The tie matters for qualification and as a direct duel with a club from a country immediately above Portugal this season.
England lead the table and could even clinch that objective mathematically on Thursday.
