Real Madrid president Florentino Perez’s explosive press conference has created quite a stir in Spanish football this week.

Perez has not only criticised Barcelona but Spanish football as a whole, including the referees’ association, calling them fraud.

However, Perez’s explosive outburst may land him in trouble, with the RFEF’s Disciplinary Committee set to determine what punishment, if any, he will face after the referees’ union filed a formal complaint.

A ban or a fine?

According to Mundo Deportivo, the RFEF Disciplinary Code presents two very different possible outcomes for the Real Madrid president.

The most severe would see Perez handed a suspension of anywhere between one month and two years, under the provision dealing with public acts that undermine sporting dignity and decorum.

In the most extreme application of that rule, he could also be banned from attending a minimum of four matches.

The likely outcome

The more likely outcome, however, is a financial fine. The relevant article covering public statements that question the honesty and impartiality of refereeing officials allows for a penalty in the region of €3,000 for club directors.

It is a relatively modest sum for a man of Perez’s means, though the reputational implications of a formal sanction would carry far greater weight.

But it indicates just how far Perez is willing to go in order to expose the Spanish footballing authority and the referees’ association, as he feels Real Madrid have been wronged by both entities in the last decade or so.

For now, Perez will look to recover from a PR nightmare emanating from his fiery presser, having already called for an emergency meeting with Real Madrid superstars.
