Ange Postecoglou has hit out at some of the ‘vile’ and ‘detestable’ abuse aimed his way during Tottenham’s FA Cup win over non-league outfit Tamworth.
Spurs needed extra time before seeing off the National League side, and while some clips circulated showing Postecoglou enjoying back and forth with the Tamworth fans, he revealed there were also some distasteful remarks directed his way.
Speaking ahead of his side’s trip to north London rivals Arsenal in the Premier League, Postecoglou said: “Credit to Andy [Peaks] and his players and the people at Tamworth, the football club. I thought they did themselves proud on the day with the way they presented everything.
“90 percent of the crowd was very good and enjoyed the banter. There was 10 percent that was pretty unacceptable.
“The stuff I heard was pretty vile and detestable. Getting things thrown at me. Not a great experience. But we’re expected to be the bigger person. I would love to turn around and not be the bigger person in that moment, but you deal with it and you go on.”
The Australian’s comments come soon after Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta slammed the online criticism Kai Havertz faced following the FA Cup exit to Manchester United.
Postecoglou can expect a different type of hostile atmosphere at Emirates Stadium as they visit a wounded Arsenal looking to make amends on Wednesday night.
After losing 1-0 in the reverse fixture at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in September, the Spurs boss is well aware of what is expected in a game he says is ‘as big as it gets’.
