Each week we rank the best teams in Europe based on their rolling performances and results.
After an epic week of domestic and Champions League football, there’s been a serious shake-up to the Power Rankings.
Sporting bowed out of the Champions League in admirable circumstances, after a narrow 1-0 aggregate defeat to Arsenal over two legs.
The Portuguese side frustrated the Gunners for much of the tie, and attention will now turn to overhauling Porto in the title race. Keeping a similar level of solidity will aid their cause. Sporting are unbeaten in the league since August.
A massive few weeks for Juventus has hauled The Old Lady back into the Champions League places. Six games unbeaten, including four wins, has lifted Juve above Como and Roma in the race for Europe. A 1-0 win at Atalanta feels like a potentially definitive result.
Napoli’s five-game winning run came to an end after the champions were held at Parma, though Antonio Conte’s men extended their unbeaten run. It doesn’t look quite enough to defend the Scudetto, however, with Inter now boasting a nine-point lead.
Speaking of which, Inter climb back into the Power Rankings table after a thrilling win at Como. The Nerazzurri recovered from two goals down to edge a seven-goal thriller, with Marcus Thuram and Denzel Dumfries on target twice. The Scudetto is in sight.
Real Madrid are heading towards a season without silverware, a scenario deemed a disaster in the Spanish capital. A draw with Girona on Friday night saw the gap to La Liga leaders Barcelona widen to nine points, before Alvaro Arbeloa’s side bowed out in Europe.
An instant classic with Bayern Munich ended 4-3 in the German side’s favour, crushing the Champions League hopes of Los Blancos.
A second successive Champions League semi-final is a history-making moment for Arsenal, but few are filled with confidence in North London.
A nervous squeeze past Sporting CP continued an unconvincing run of results, and it’s now one win in five after defeat to Bournemouth at the Emirates.
This weekend’s clash with Manchester City in the club’s biggest game in two decades.
The La Liga finish line is in sight for Barcelona who are heading towards another crown.
A 4-1 derby thumping of Espanyol extended their lead at the summit, before a valiant, if unsuccessful, attempt to turn around their Champions League quarter-final with Atletico Madrid. Barcelona are a cut above in Spain, but Hansi Flick must address repeated flaws in Europe.
Manchester City are looming in Arsenal’s shadow. After a ruthless performance to dispatch Liverpool in the FA Cup, the Citizens swatted aside Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.
Six points behind the Gunners, with a game in hand, and set to welcome the table toppers to the Etihad this weekend. The Premier League’s Great White Shark is ready to strike.
Last season, Paris Saint-Germain overcame an unconvincing start to power down the run-in and win the lot. Could Luis Enrique’s side be about to repeat the feat?
Ligue 1 is now firmly in their hands, while PSG hammered Chelsea and Liverpool on route to the Champions League semi-finals. Their upcoming clashes with Bayern Munich will be pure cinema.
Are Bayern Munich the best team in Europe right now? They’re certainly among the best entertainment.
It’s rained goals in Bavaria all season long and a ludicrous 4-3 win over Real Madrid has booked a Champions League semi-final against PSG. Grab the popcorn for that one.
