Pragmatic Potter is failing to inspire West Ham revival

When Graham Potter replaced Julen Lopetegui as manager, West Ham United were 14th in the Premier League and still in the FA Cup.

Last night’s 1-0 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers left them 16th in the standings. The FA Cup? Nothing but a distant memory.

Potter’s underwhelming tenure at West Ham currently bears all the hallmarks of ‘be careful what you wish for’.

West Ham have gone backwards under Potter

After a disappointing spell as Chelsea manager, Potter arrived at West Ham on a mission to repair his damaged reputation. It’s not going well.

The Hammers have won just three of his eleven games in charge. Worryingly, their fixture list during that period looks favourable on paper.

West Ham fans were critical of the style of play under Lopetegui, yet you would be hard-pushed to argue things are any better under Potter.

If anything, the team is now even more defensive – a far cry from the so-called ‘West Ham Way’ that fans crave.

Potter’s side have registered the fewest attacks of any Premier League team since he took charge – a truly damning statistic.

Aside from games against Southampton (H) and Ipswich Town (A), West Ham’s remaining fixtures look tricky. If results don’t improve, Potter may not last beyond the end of the season.
