Premier League a ‘concrete’ option for Frimpong despite Spain preference | OneFootball

Jeremie Frimpong is planning to leave Bayer Leverkusen this summer amid interest in the defender from England and Spain.

Frimpong has emerged as one of Europe’s most effective attacking wing-backs since joining Leverkusen from Celtic in 2021. The 24-year-old scored nine goals and provided seven assists in the Bundesliga last season, as Leverkusen won a maiden German title without losing a game. This season, he’s hit three goals and added 10 assists in all competitions.

Sky Germany are reporting that Frimpong has decided to leave Leverkusen in the summer. Enquiries have been made from clubs in Spain and England for the Dutch international, who has been named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season in consecutive campaigns.

Frimpong came through the academy at Manchester City but departed for Celtic having failed to make a senior appearance. His former club are among those credited with interest, as the Citizens search for a long-term replacement for Kyle Walker.

Liverpool could also emerge as suitors, should Trent Alexander-Arnold not sign a new deal. The England international is out of contract in the summer and a target for Real Madrid who, coincidentally, consider Frimpong as a potential alternative should a deal not be agreed. The Spanish champions are seeking a successor to Dani Carvajal at right-back.

Frimpong’s preference is believed to be a move to Spain, despite strong interest from the Premier League. Leverkusen will allow the Dutchman to leave this summer for a fee 40 million euros (£33.6m).
