The Premier League is set to resist expanding VAR to cover corners and second yellow cards next season, despite the system being used at the World Cup.

According to The Guardian, following discussions with PGMOL the league has turned down widening VAR for next season, and clubs are concerned about extra disruption and not prepared to overrule the refereeing body.

IFAB approved a regulation change in February permitting VAR officials to rule on corners and second yellow cards from next month. World Cup referees will use those powers after a request from FIFA.

PGMOL has raised concerns that extending checks could increase match length, risk alienating broadcasters, and place further pressure on officials.

VAR has sparked weekly controversy in the Premier League this season. A March survey claimed 75 per cent of fans oppose the technology.

FIFA take a different view. Referees chief Pierluigi Collina and president Gianni Infantino are said to fear an incorrect corner could significantly influence a World Cup match.
