Real Madrid’s quest to carry out a generational transition away from their crop of central defenders that brought them two Champions Leagues in three years will continue next year, after bringing in Dean Huijsen this summer for €60m. Los Blancos could have a shot at a major signing in January.

Los Blancos have been heavily linked with Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate, and Arsenal’s William Saliba in recent months, but a new five-year deal at the Emirates means that the latter will have to be scratched from their shortlist.

Marc Guehi keen on Real Madrid move

However the availability of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi throws up an interesting opportunity for Los Blancos. Real Madrid could sign him on a free in January, as is the case with Ibrahima Konate. According to Caught Offside, Guehi has specifically asked that his representatives keep their lines of communication open with Real Madrid. There is some suggestion that he could also be available in January.

Intense competition for Guehi

However Real Madrid will face competition for Guehi if they do want to sign him. Barcelona are also supposedly monitoring his situation, but the strongest competition is likely to come from England and the Premier League. Tottenham Hotspur have now decided to make their interest known to Guehi, which would afford him the chance to remain in England.

In the North of England, Liverpool remain interested in completing the deal they nearly got done on deadline day. Manchester City and Manchester United are also keen on Guehi, should be interested in a move. For Los Blancos, they will feel confident of being able to persuade Guehi to make the move to Spain, where England teammates Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jude Bellingham can provide a softer landing for him in the Spanish capital.
